Lepidoptera – Moths

Moths are not a separate order from butterflies or skippers and not all are night-flying. Most are and most do not fold their wings in the same way as butterflies.

I have recently (August 2026) started trapping moths to see what turns up in my tiny yard. It is small and urban, but does have the advantage of being on the southeast coast.

Before I stated trapping I had recorded less than 20 species in the garden in almost 27 years.

In the first three weeks of August 2026 I have trapped on ten nights and now have a garden list of 75 including a rarity shown below.
