Merodon equestris – Narcissus Bulb Fly
Narcissus Bulb Fly or large Narcissus Fly is one of the commonest and most widespread bumblebee mimics among hoverflies. The coloration is quite variable as it mimics different bumblebees. The true bumblebee mimics have the distinguishing feature of a triangular shapre projection on their swolen hind femora (best seen in the first picture below).
The common name reflects their probably introduction into the UK with imported daffodil bulbs in the nineteenth century.
